Breast reduction
Large breasts can negatively impact a woman both physically and emotionally, and can lead to symptoms including chorionic back pain, breakouts, poor posture, low self-esteem, and restricted activities. Many women seek treatment to reduce the painful effects of large breasts, while improving their self-confidence and overall quality of life. Also known as mammoplasty, breast reduction is a surgery that reduces the size of disproportionate breasts by removing excess fat, tissue, and skin to achieve the desired appearance and to relieve physical and emotional symptoms.
During a breast reduction procedure, the surgeon makes either two circular incisions around the nipple or a single boat-anchor incision that surrounds the nipple and extends down the breast along the breast crease. Fat and glandular tissue are removed while excess skin is tightened to create a smaller, more natural-looking breast. In some cases, it may be necessary to remove the nipple and areola to reposition them higher on the breast. The results of a breast reduction are visible immediately and will continue to improve as swelling and bruising subside. Scars will continue to fade over time, becoming less noticeable.
Breast augmentation
Breast augmentation is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedures in the United States. By inserting implants, it can give women with small or unevenly sized breasts a fuller, firmer, and more proportionate appearance. Women may seek breast augmentation for various medical or aesthetic reasons, including the need to balance breast size or to compensate for breast loss after pregnancy or surgery. Breast augmentation may be combined with other procedures, such as a breast lift, for more satisfying results.
Breast implants are silicone prostheses filled with either saline or cohesive silicone gel. The prostheses are inserted behind each breast, under the breast tissue or pectoral muscle. The procedure takes one to two hours and is usually performed under general anesthesia. After surgery, the patient's bust can be increased by one or more cup sizes.
Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
A woman's breasts can become droopy due to aging, heredity, gravity, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss. A breast lift, also called a mastopexy, is performed to restore a more youthful shape and to lift breasts that are drooping or have lost volume and firmness.
A breast lift gives a rejuvenated appearance to the breasts by removing excess skin and firming soft tissue to achieve a lifted, more youthful contour. After a mastopexy, the breasts feel more lifted and firmer. A breast lift can also reposition and reduce the size of the areola (the darker skin surrounding the nipple), which may have stretched or sagged.
A mastopexy is usually performed as a day surgery under general anesthesia and lasts 1 to 3 hours. Most patients are immediately satisfied with their new breasts and can usually return to work 1 to 2 weeks after the procedure.
Male breast reduction
Gynecomastia, the excessive development of male breasts, affects approximately 40 to 60% of men. It can be caused by hormonal imbalance, obesity, certain medications, or heredity and can affect one or both breasts.
Candidates for breast reduction are men with large or sagging breasts, which may make them physically or emotionally uncomfortable.
Breast reduction can be performed on men whose chest development is complete, who are physically and emotionally healthy, who do not smoke, and who are not overweight. Ideally, candidates have firm, elastic skin that will reshape to fit the contour of the breast after surgery. Patients can usually return to work within a week.
Male breast reduction is usually performed under general anesthesia and typically takes 1 to 2.5 hours. It is performed either by liposuction, surgery, or a combination of both. Light aerobic exercise can be performed after one week, but vigorous activity should be avoided for 4 to 6 weeks.
